Fall Activities for Kids in NYC & Westchester

Apple picking, hiking, skating, and a few ideas that don’t show up on every list. From someone who works outside with kids every day of the year.

Kids outdoors in a New York park during fall

Every September the same thing happens. The heat breaks, the leaves start turning, and parents ask me what they should be doing with their kids outside before winter shuts everything down. I teach skateboarding year-round across NYC and Westchester, so I’m outdoors with families six days a week. I see what works and what doesn’t.

Fall in New York is short. You get maybe ten weeks of good weather between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. The light gets better, the air cools off, and the parks empty out enough that you can hear yourself think. It’s the best stretch of the year to be outside with a kid. Here’s what I’d do with it.

Is Fall a Good Time for Kids to Start Skateboarding?

Fall is the best season for skateboard lessons in the NYC area. Cooler temperatures mean kids stay focused longer, parks thin out after summer, and dry autumn air keeps concrete grippy. I’ve found that students who begin in September tend to progress faster than those who start in the heat of June.

Fall is when I do my best teaching. The summer heat makes everything harder. Kids get tired faster, the concrete radiates, you’re fighting hydration the whole session. In the fall, all of that goes away. The air is cool, the parks are less crowded, and kids can focus longer. I’ve noticed that students who start in September tend to progress faster than students who start in June.

I teach private and group lessons at parks across NYC and Westchester for ages 3 and up. A single session is $120, and there’s a 3-Lesson Starter for $300 if your kid wants to try a few sessions before committing. Most beginners are riding on their own by session three, and a lot of them keep going from there.

Rain days get rescheduled at no cost. Weather cancellations never burn a session from your package. That matters in October and November when you get the occasional washout.

Where Can You Take Kids Apple Picking Near NYC?

Dozens of orchards within an hour of the city open from September through late October, and New York State produces roughly 29 million bushels of apples per year—third most in the country. Harvest Moon Farm in North Salem and Stuart’s Fruit Farm in Granite Springs are my top picks from Westchester.

This is the one everyone does, and for good reason. It gets you out of the city, the kids burn energy walking rows, and you leave with something tangible. Harvest Moon Farm in North Salem is the closest quality option from Westchester. Stuart’s Fruit Farm in Granite Springs is smaller but less crowded on weekends. Both have apple cider and doughnuts, which is the real reason most families go.

From the city, a lot of families drive up to Fishkill Farms in the Hudson Valley. It’s about an hour from midtown and the variety selection is deeper. They grow everything from Honeycrisp to Macoun. Get there early on a weekend. By noon the lot is full and you’re waiting in line for everything.

What Are the Best Fall Foliage Hikes for Kids Near NYC?

Peak foliage in the lower Hudson Valley typically hits mid-to-late October, and Westchester County alone maintains over 18,000 acres of parkland and preserves. Ward Pound Ridge Reservation and Teatown Lake Reservation offer kid-friendly trails surrounded by maples and oaks at their most vivid.

Peak foliage in Westchester usually hits mid to late October. Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River is the best spot in the county for it. Over 4,700 acres, dozens of trails, and when the maples turn the whole place looks like it was lit by a set designer. The Leatherman’s Cave trail gives kids something to hike toward, which matters when you’re trying to keep a six-year-old moving on a trail.

Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining is another good one. The boardwalk through the wetlands looks different every season, and in the fall the colors reflect off the lake in a way that makes your phone camera useless. Just go and see it. Cranberry Lake Preserve in White Plains works for younger kids. The main loop is about a mile and a half, mostly flat, and you can be back at the car in under two hours.

In the city, the Bronx Botanical Garden does fall foliage well. Central Park too, though it’s never quiet. Prospect Park in Brooklyn is the sleeper pick for fall hiking with kids. The Ravine trail feels like you left the city. In October, it looks it.

Where Are the Best Corn Mazes and Pumpkin Patches Near NYC?

Corn mazes and pumpkin patches run from late September through the end of October across the region. The Queens County Farm Museum has operated continuously since 1697—making it the longest-running farm in New York State. In Westchester, Outhouse Orchards in Croton Falls packs a maze, hayrides, and apple picking into one stop.

Outhouse Orchards in Croton Falls is the one I’d recommend if you want to stay in Westchester. They have a corn maze, hayrides, pumpkins, and apple picking all in one spot. It checks every box without trying to be a theme park about it.

The Amazing Maize Maze at the Queens County Farm Museum is the closest corn maze to Manhattan. The farm has been there since 1697. That alone is worth the trip if your kid is at the age where historical facts land. The maze itself is surprisingly long. Budget more time than you think.

What Are the Best Fall Bike Rides for Kids in NYC and Westchester?

Fall temperatures between 50 and 70 degrees make cycling comfortable for young riders, and the region offers over 100 miles of paved, car-free trails. The Bronx River Greenway and the North and South County Trailways are flat, scenic, and noticeably less crowded once school is back in session.

The Bronx River Greenway runs from the Kensico Dam in Westchester down through the Bronx to Soundview Park. In the fall, the section between Scarsdaleand Bronxville is beautiful. Trees on both sides, quiet, and flat enough for younger riders. The North County and South County Trailways in Westchester are also paved and car-free, and they’re less crowded in October than they are in the summer.

In the city, the Hudson River Greenway from the George Washington Bridge down through Riverside Park is a solid fall ride. The light along the river in late afternoon is one of those things that makes you forget you’re in Manhattan.

Are Farmers Markets a Good Fall Activity for Kids?

Farmers markets work surprisingly well as kid outings. New York City alone has over 50 Greenmarket locations, and the fall harvest brings peak variety—squash, apples, root vegetables, and cider. Letting a child choose the produce for dinner gives them a stake in the meal and a reason to stay engaged.

Not the most obvious kid activity, but I’ve seen it work. Kids like picking things out. Letting a seven-year-old choose the apples and the squash for dinner gives them a stake in the meal. The Union Square Greenmarket runs year-round and is at its best in October when the fall harvest comes in. Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn does Saturday mornings. In Westchester, the Pleasantville Farmers Market is one of the better ones.

What Nature Centers and Science Programs Run in the Fall Near NYC?

Several nature centers across Westchester and the Bronx run fall-specific programming for children, from guided foliage walks to live animal encounters. Greenburgh Nature Center in Scarsdale and Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining both offer indoor exhibits alongside outdoor trails—making them solid backup plans when rain cancels everything else.

Greenburgh Nature Center in Scarsdale runs fall programs for kids, including animal encounters and guided nature walks. They have live animals year-round. Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining does the same. Both are good for rainy days when you need a backup plan that isn’t a screen.

In the city, the American Museum of Natural History always has something fall-themed going. The Bronx Zoo does a fall harvest festival. Wave Hill in Riverdale has family art programs outdoors in the gardens, and the views of the Palisades from there in October are hard to beat.

How Long Does the Fall Outdoor Season Last in New York?

You get roughly ten weeks of reliable outdoor weather between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. Once daylight saving time ends in early November, sunset drops to around 4:30 p.m. and outdoor options narrow fast. The window is short, so the time to plan is now.

Ten weeks. That’s what you get between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. Once the clocks change in November you lose the light by 4:30 and the options narrow. The fall is for getting outside while the getting is good. Pick two or three things from this list and do them before the window closes.

If skateboarding is one of them, fall is the time to start. Book a lesson or text me at (914) 294-4407.
