Coleman Skatepark Is Right Here
LES Coleman (Coleman Playground) at Pike and Monroe is one of the best skateparks in Manhattan. It has smooth concrete, a big flat area for beginners, and enough features that you won't outgrow it. Leon teaches here regularly because it works for every level.
Flat Ground Everywhere
The blocks around Delancey, Grand, and East Broadway are wide and flat. That matters when you're learning to push and cruise. Between the parks and the sidewalks, there's no shortage of smooth pavement to practice on.

Leon picks the spot based on what you’re working on. Here are the main locations he uses on the Lower East Side.
LES Coleman Skatepark (Coleman Playground)
Pike St and Monroe St, under the Manhattan Bridge. This is Leon's go-to spot on the LES. The park has a large flat section, ledges, rails, and a bowl. Beginners use the open flat area while more experienced students work on park features. There's shade from the bridge overhead, which helps on summer afternoons.
Sara D. Roosevelt Park
Runs along Chrystie St from Houston down to Canal. The paved paths here are wide and smooth with long straightaways. Leon uses this park for students who want to work on pushing, carving, and building comfort on the board before moving to a skatepark setting.
East River Greenway
The waterfront path along the East River south of the Williamsburg Bridge. Flat, paved, and usually less crowded than the parks on weekday mornings. Good for cruising practice and building confidence at speed without worrying about obstacles.
What to Expect
Leon starts every lesson by checking in on where you are and what you want to work on. If it’s your first time, that means stance, balance, and pushing. If you’ve skated before, he’ll pick up from wherever you left off and focus on what needs the most attention.
Sessions last about an hour. Bring flat-soled sneakers and clothes you can move in. Having your own board is encouraged so you can practice between lessons, but Leon can provide one. Helmets are required for anyone under 18.

Getting to the Lower East Side
By subway: Take the F or M to East Broadway, or the J/Z to Essex St. Both are a short walk from Coleman Skatepark. The B/D at Grand St also works.
By bike or on foot: The LES is flat and easy to get around. The Williamsburg Bridge bike path drops you right into the neighborhood if you're coming from Brooklyn.
