Built for Adult Beginners
A large share of Leon's Williamsburg students are adults who never skated as kids. The flat paths at McCarren and along the waterfront are perfect for learning to push, turn, and stop without the pressure of a busy skatepark.
Williamsburg is where a lot of Leon’s adult students start. Something about the neighborhood draws people who are curious about learning to skateboard as an adult — maybe they see riders on Bedford Avenue every weekend, or they walk past McCarren Park and wonder what it would take to learn. The answer is usually one session with Leon.
He also teaches families here. McCarren has wide open areas where kids can spread out, and the waterfront paths along the East River are smooth and long enough to work on distance and speed. Leon picks the spot based on the student’s goals — first-timers get flat ground and low traffic, while more experienced riders might head to one of the best skate spots in the city to work on curbs and ledges.
Where Lessons Happen
Leon teaches at parks and open spaces around Williamsburg. Here are the usual meeting spots.
McCarren Park
A large park straddling the Williamsburg-Greenpoint border with wide paved paths and open flat areas. Great for beginners working on balance, pushing, and turning. Weekday mornings are especially quiet.
East River Waterfront
Long, smooth paths along the water with enough room to practice longer rides and build speed. The scenery helps take your mind off the learning curve, and the surface is well-maintained.
Berry Street Area
Side streets and open pavement near the commercial strip. Leon uses these spots for students who want a quick, accessible location without trekking to a park. Flat ground, minimal traffic on quieter blocks.
What to Expect
McCarren Park has more open pavement than most parks in the city, and the waterfront paths along the East River are smooth and long enough to practice real riding. Williamsburg draws a lot of adult beginners — people who see riders cruising down Bedford or along Kent Avenue and decide they want in. Leon meets you at McCarren, the Berry Street area, or wherever works, and adjusts every session to where you are and what you want to learn.
Each session is about an hour. Wear flat-soled skate shoes and clothes you can move in. Leon provides a board if you don’t have one, but bringing your own means you can keep practicing after the lesson. Helmets are required for students under 18.
