Why Learn in Yorktown Heights
Room to Spread Out
Yorktown's parks have the kind of open, paved areas that work well for skateboarding — wide paths, smooth surfaces, and enough room that beginners don't feel crowded or rushed.
Northern Westchester Reach
Yorktown Heights is at the top of Leon's Westchester range. Families in Cortlandt, Mohegan Lake, and Shrub Oak are close enough that meeting in Yorktown keeps things convenient.
Yorktown Heights has a slower pace than a lot of lower Westchester — fewer pedestrians competing for path space, less traffic near the parks, and the kind of flat terrain that works well for first-time skaters. Sparkle Lake Park is the standout spot, but Leon uses several locations around town depending on what makes sense for the session.
If your kid has been watching skate videos and asking to try, Yorktown is a low-pressure place to start. The parks aren’t overcrowded, the surfaces are good, and Leon handles the instruction so you don’t have to figure out YouTube tutorials in a parking lot.
Where Lessons Happen
Leon teaches at parks and flat areas around Yorktown Heights. Here are the spots he uses most.
Sparkle Lake Park
Paved paths around the lake with long, flat stretches that are great for pushing and cruising practice. Enough room for drills without competing for space. Parking is easy.
Downing Park
Open paved areas and paths that Leon uses for balance work and turning drills. A quieter option that works well for younger students or early-morning sessions.
Railroad Park
Smooth pavement near the town center. Leon uses this spot for quick sessions or when the other parks are busy. Flat, manageable, and easy to get to.
What to Expect
Leon sizes up each student before they step on the board—where they’re at, what they want to learn, and what pace feels right. For first lessons, that means stance, balance, and pushing. For returning students, he builds on what you already know and introduces new skills when you’re ready.
Each session is about an hour. Wear flat-soled sneakers and clothes that don’t restrict movement. Leon can provide a board if needed, but having your own is best for practicing between lessons. Helmets are required for students under 18.

What Students Say
“Leon is one of the best skater/teachers in New York. He's very knowledgeable. And also very patient with his students. Skating is very difficult and there is a lot of repetition. He will be guiding you the whole way making sure you land trick. Highly recommended if you or your child wants to get into skating.”
